It is indeed real. The shell is finished with a moisture-reactive coating that stays completely hidden when dry, giving you a clean black look. The moment wet snow hits the fabric, the pattern activates instantly right where it landed, then resets back to black as it dries.

No. The process is initiated by moisture, which means that water can also activate the effect.

No — it's completely reusable. The color appears when the jacket is cold and returns to black as it heats up, repeatedly for as long as you desire. Handle the print with care, and it will continue to function: cold wash, no fabric softener, no tumble drying, and hang it to dry. Just avoid hot washes and the dryer, as these are what reduce the lifespan of any reactive print. If you take good care of it, it will last through multiple seasons.
